Transurethral resection of the Prostate (TURP) - who is it for?
Who Is Transurethral resection of the Prostate (TURP) For?
TURP is recommended when the prostate has a blockage of urine flow due to enlarged prostate. It is used to treat serious prostate symptoms only if other treatments have not worked.
The symptoms include:
- weak urinary stream
- difficulty to start to urinate
- feeling the bladder isn’t fully empty after urinating
- having to pass urine frequently and/or urgently
What are the benefits?
Because only the middle part of the prostate is removed through the urethra, to release the blockage and allow you to pass urine more easily, it’s a less invasive operation with faster recovery times than open surgery.
TURP is used most often for non-cancerous blockage, but may also be used in some cases of prostate cancer, instead of TURBT.
TURP is also commonly used to treat Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH). There is another surgical treatment available for BPH, more information is on our BPH Treatment page.
What happens During Surgery?
A local or general anesthetic will be administered before the surgery commences. A small camera and a cutting device to remove the tissue from the prostate will be inserted through the urethra.
How long will I stay in hospital?
You may be able to go home a night after surgery.
What is my recovery time?
A urinary catheter will be inserted to drain urine after the operation. Some blood is to be expected and bladder spasms or contractions might occur when draining. A drip may be in place overnight to flush out the blood from the bladder. A burning sensation or the need to urinate frequently may be experienced when urinating. These symptoms will usually settle with time. After the surgery, avoid strenuous activities for about 6 – 8 weeks. Consume plenty of fibre and drink 2 – 3 litres of fluid per day to avoid constipation.
Do you qualify for This Self Pay Procedure?
You are suitable for this surgery if:
- You are over 16 years of age
- You are not pregnant
- You do not require complex rehabilitation or have a chronic disease that would require immediate post-operative care in an intensive care unit
- You do not have sickle cell anaemia, renal failure or have had a cardiac arrest or cardiac intervention (e.g. insertions of stents) in the last six months
