What Is ACL Reconstruction Surgery?
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) serves as a vital stabilizer for your knee joint. If you experience persistent instability in your knee post-ACL rupture, opting for reconstruction surgery can greatly improve its stability, both in everyday movements and during sports activities. This surgical intervention may open up opportunities for returning to sports at a level that might have seemed unachievable otherwise.

Who is ACL Reconstruction surgery for?
ACL Reconstruction is for very active people, who have damaged their knee and want to return to sport or exercise. Common causes are football or skiing injuries.
What are the benefits?
You should experience reduced knee instability, allowing you to participate in some or all sporting activities once again.
What happens During Surgery?
The operation usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.
Your surgeon will create one or more incisions around your knee. Many surgeons utilise arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) for the procedure, employing a camera to visualise the interior of your knee.
Your surgeon will use a suitable piece of tissue (a graft) from another part of your body to replace the ACL.
Special screws or anchors are used to secure the top and bottom ends of the replacement ligament into holes drilled in the bone.
How long will I stay in hospital?
You should be able to go home the same day, or one day later.
What is my recovery time?
Your surgeon might recommend wearing a knee brace for several weeks following the procedure. As your knee begins to stabilize, you’ll embark on an intensive recovery regimen.
Engaging in regular exercise is crucial to facilitate a swift return to normal activities. Before starting any exercise program, consult your healthcare team or GP for guidance.
While most individuals experience a successful recovery after ACL reconstruction, it requires diligent effort.
It’s important to understand that your knee may not fully regain its pre-injury condition.
