What are the benefits?
The removal of the hernia after the surgery and prevent severe complications in the future. The patient will be able to return to a normal lifestyle without feeling inhibited.
What happens During Surgery?
A general anesthetic will be administered before the surgery commences.
A few incisions will be made on the abdomen to insert some ports. The abdominal cavity will be filled with gas. A small camera (laparoscope) will be inserted to evaluate the area. Once identified the affected abdomen wall will be repaired.
There is a second option for Inguinal Hernia surgery called the open surgery. The surgeon will cut open through your abdomen near the hernia and repair the weak tissue.
How long will I stay in hospital?
You can return home on the same day or after 1 or 2 days staying in the hospital.
What is my recovery time?
You will spend a short period of time in recovery after surgery to allow the anaesthetic to wear off. Pain may be present after the operation. Take over the counter medicine to reduce the pain. Avoid strenuous activities for at least 6 weeks. Recommended to do regular light exercises for the first few days such as walking to speed up your recovery.
Do you qualify for This Self Pay Procedure?
You are suitable for this surgery if:
- You are over 16 years of age
- You are not pregnant
- You do not require complex rehabilitation or have a chronic disease that would require immediate post-operative care in an intensive care unit
- You do not have sickle cell anaemia, renal failure or have had a cardiac arrest or cardiac intervention (e.g. insertions of stents) in the last six months
