What Is Knee Arthroscopy and Meniscal repair?
A knee arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery that enables your surgeon to make small cuts in your skin and insert a tiny camera to examine the inside of your knee. This allows your surgeon to identify serious problems including arthritis, ligament damage and torn cartilage (meniscus).

Who Is A Knee Arthroscopy and Meniscal Repair For?
A knee arthroscopy is for patients who want to have the problems affecting their knee(s) diagnosed and addressed with minimal pain and a shorter recovery period.
What are the benefits?
A knee arthroscopy allows the surgeon to confirm the problem in a patient’s knee previously identified in MRI scans (and quite often repair the knee during the same procedure). Smaller incisions in the skin thanks to keyhole surgery results in less pain for the patient after their procedure and potentially a speedier recovery.
What happens During Surgery?
You will be put under an anaesthetic which will also help relax your muscles completely.
Your surgeon will make one or more incisions around your knee and insert a small camera through them to examine your knee ligaments.
Your surgeon will look for damage to ligaments, cartilage and joint surface on the inside of the knee.
In most cases torn cartilage can be trimmed or repaired without the surgeon needing to make a bigger incision.
A knee arthroscopy takes between 30 and 45 minutes on average.
How long Will I Stay in hospital?
A knee arthroscopy is a day surgery and patients are able to return home the same day.
What is my recovery time?
Your knee will likely be a little swollen for several weeks.
You may be given painkillers to relieve pain since moving about and walking can be uncomfortable.
The majority of patients experience a good recovery.
Exercising on a regular basis usually helps to speed up your return to everyday activities as quickly as possible.
Consult your GP or a healthcare professional for advice before starting any new exercise routine.
