What Is Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass involves dividing the stomach in two to form a gastric (stomach) pouch.

The small intestine is divided, and one end joined to the gastric pouch. Gastric secretions from the large portion of the stomach, as well as bile and pancreatic juices, mix with the food you eat - downstream, where the small intestine is joined to itself. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic through 5 laparoscopic (keyhole) incisions.

This new arrangement results in patients feeling fuller after eating and influences the way fat and carbohydrates are processed internally.

What are the Benefits of Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery?

After your Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass with Self Pay Surgery, you’ll start with liquid meal replacements and other liquid foods. Over the next few weeks you will change to pureed food, then to solid food. Your meals will be much smaller and you may have to stop drinking with meals due to your small stomach.

Less calories will be absorbed into the body, and you will feel full after eating only a small amount.

Losing weight after Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery can help reduce problems like Type 2 diabetes, asthma episodes and blood pressure and can help improve cardiac health and fitness.

What happens During Surgery?

Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass surgery is performed while under general anaesthetic. The surgery is usually done as a laparoscopy (keyhole procedure), but sometimes an open operation may be used.

During the procedure, staples are used to create a small pouch in the top part of the stomach. The pouch is attached by stitches to the lower part of the small intestine so food will bypass most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

How long will I stay in hospital?

Usually, your stay will be 2 days.

What is my recovery time?

You should return to normal activities in 2-4 weeks.
