Who Is a GreenLight Laser PVP Surgery For?
This surgery is for men who experience difficulty when passing urine (voiding dysfunction) due to an enlarged prostate gland. This is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), the most common prostate problem affecting men over the age of 50. The enlargement obstructs and narrows the urethra, preventing urine from travelling smoothly from the bladder to the tip of the penis. Symptoms include: the need to urinate frequently and urgently, difficulty in starting urination, weak and inconsistent flow, dribbling, and incomplete emptying of the bladder.
What are the benefits?

The treatment is effective and long lasting with fewer side effects. Patients experience immediate alleviation of symptoms and improvement to urine flow with no blood loss. Patients stay in hospital for a shorter period of time (usually only one night) and catheterisation is usually less than 24 hours in the majority of cases.
What happens During Surgery?
You will need to fast in the lead up to the operation. A general or spinal anaesthetic will be administered.
The cystoscope (telescopic camera) will be inserted into the urethra and will progress towards the prostate and bladder. Your surgeon will examine the inner lining of your prostate and bladder to identify the area requiring attention. The laser fibre will then be inserted through the cystoscope and the greenlight laser beam directed at the affected prostatic tissue. The laser vaporises the tissue and coagulates blood vessels to eliminate any bleeding. Your surgeon will continue to use the laser until all obstructing tissue in the prostate has been eliminated. Surgery time varies between 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the enlarged prostate. A catheter will then be inserted at the end of the procedure.
How long will I stay in hospital?
Most patients who undergo GreenLight Laser PVP surgery stay overnight and return home the next day.
What is my recovery time?
Your prostate will need up to eight weeks to heal after surgery.
You will initially spend time in recovery to allow the effect of the anaesthetic to wear off and check that the catheter is draining properly. Upon being transferred to the ward you will put on compression stockings and be administered a blood thinner to prevent blood clots forming in your legs (DVT).
You will be able to eat and drink as normal and be encouraged to move about. Your catheter will be moved in the early morning after surgery and you will be encouraged to drink fluids. A nurse will check the volume of urine you pass and scan your bladder to determine how much urine is left inside.
You will be discharged in the early afternoon if you are able to empty your bladder sufficiently. You will need someone to drive you home upon discharge from hospital.
You will be given antibiotics to take over one week.
During the recovery period you are likely to experience the need to pass urine urgently or frequently, intermittent bleeding in the urine, and a stinging or burning sensation while urinating. Over the counter medication can help alleviate any associated pain and symptoms. The re-insertion of a urinary catheter may be necessary in cases where the patient is experiencing heavy bleeding with clots and is unable to pass urine.
A follow up appointment with your surgeon will be scheduled 6-8 weeks post surgery.
