Who Is Shoulder Stabilisation Surgery For?
Shoulder instability is often the result of some form of repetitive strain or trauma, including serious falls and sports injuries. Once the shoulder joint slips out of place it loosens over time, meaning dislocations (partial or full) are more than likely to reoccur in the future. People who have extra flexible joints and loose ligaments from birth are more susceptible to shoulder instability and may also benefit from this surgery.
What are the benefits?
Stabilising the shoulder through surgery will prevent it from dislocating in the future. Associated pain, numbness, and the sensation of the shoulder feeling out of place will be greatly reduced. The patient will be able to return to an active lifestyle and work duties over time without feeling inhibited.
What happens During Surgery?
You will be put under a general anaesthetic before surgery.
Two or three incisions will be made in your shoulder by the surgeon. A small camera (arthroscope) will be inserted to evaluate the condition of your tendons and capsule joint in your shoulder. Once identified the affected areas will then be tightened or repaired.
Shoulder stabilisation surgery can take up to two hours.
How long Will I Stay in hospital?
Most patients stay one night in hospital following their surgery and return home the next day.
What is my recovery time?
Most patients require a minimum of three months to make a full recovery following shoulder stabilisation surgery.
You will be given painkillers to minimise pain after surgery.
The patient is given exercises by a physiotherapist to regain normal range of movement and strengthen the shoulder over time.
A sling will need to be worn for 4-6 weeks following your operation to protect the shoulder. It may be possible to perform light office duties at this time.
Many patients are able to drive 6-8 weeks after surgery.
After twelve weeks most patients have a greater range of movement and may be able to perform manual labour or more intensive activities with a low risk of shoulder injury.
